Editor, Custom Communications

Position Summary: We are seeking a team member who would have a leading role in the development of Transcontinental Custom Communications’ creative team, including the development of and our response to new business opportunities and to appoint and lead creative staff and contributors to create award-winning magazines and digital communications. You will be required to work closely with Transcontinental’s UK partner, Seven Squared, and will be responsible for replicating that business’s custom publishing processes and leveraging creative capabilities where appropriate.

Responsibilities:

  • Interpret client briefs and conceive, develop and execute a high quality of editorial and work across multiple platforms to exceed the client’s marketing objectives and their aspirations for the work.
  • Organise and oversee all editorial output
  • Monitor and co-ordinate the use of contributors ensuring TCC pays competitive rates – oversee editorial commissioning
  • Collaborate with the Head of Creative to ensure s/he is fully briefed from an editorial perspective
  • Ensure editorial line-ups/synopsises are well thought through and deliver the most effective publishing solution
  • Ensure the quality of writing and copy/fact checking is of the highest standard
  • Input into new business pitches where required
  • Ensure that all projects are delivered within editorial budget
  • Build and maintain relationship between editorial team and client with account management input
  • Write, edit and check copy where required
  • Input into future strategic direction of each client account and the business overall.

Experience:  

  • Minimum five years’ editorial experience in consumer magazine publishing, which includes writing, commissioning and editing; Experience providing client-facing agency-style services, either in custom publishing or in a pure agency environment

Knowledge:   

  • Good all round knowledge of Canadian and US brands and an appreciation of the business environment they operate in; Strong knowledge of relevant Mac and PC software; Thorough knowledge of the design process; An understanding of the evolving marketing communications’ landscape and clear ideas about the future role and scope of custom publications and branded content; A strong familiarity with Canadian consumers is essential; knowledge of custom publishing markets and bilingualism are definite assets;

Competencies:

  • Ability to attract, manage, lead and motivate the best creative talent to work on pitches and project implementation. Proven success in managing multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment, including the ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously; Excellent freelance contacts; Ability to travel 20% of the time.
